Aksa Beach

July 27th 2008 18:01
Today being a Sunday I went for a drive. My plan was to go out of Mumbai however we became late owing to my late night surfing and well we got out by 11.00 am. I found myself at Aksa Beach after some 2 hours of driving and it was a wonderful place!
Not crowded at all... it is a wild beach. By wild I mean the sea does not seem tame. (Well I don't know how you feel about the sea but I find it has a character, different at every beach. So this one seemed untame and wild. And maybe this 'feel' has something in it, cause quite a few deaths have happened here due to its unpredictable nature.)

What I guessed in my short time there was that the water probably comes in too quick during high tide, I was standing on the rocks (which are very interesting I must mention, they were all covered with these weird coral/shell type stuff. Which looked kinda gross but interested me) when the water started coming in and since I was really alert I just waded back quickly but one patch of my way was already water logged, so while frolicking in the water if I had failed to notice the rise in the levels it could be a bad scenario! So my sympathies with the people lost on this beach.

There are also some vendors at the beach which sell hot tea, corn cobs, bhel and other snacks.

This beach is next to a village called Madh. As Mumbai grew around this village it now mainly consists of a bunch of slum houses and a few small brick apartments, but along this village one can get to the Madh Fort, thoug that is usually closed for public. However there is a small path leading to a Shiva Temple from where we can get really close to the Fort from behind.

Little Ben

July 19th 2008 15:00
One of the landmarks of Mumbai is the Rajabai Tower. Shaped like the Big Ben of England, this tower stands gloriously from the campus of The University of Mumbai. It is named after the mother of the architect Rajabai.

I don't know what Big Ben exactly does but this tower chimes every hour. Though during the busy day these chimes are not really audible unless you are standing under it or lying on the lawns of Mumbai Univ. to hear them. But on a silent night these chimes permeate the air and many times while passing by I have heard these chimes from quite afar. There is a spiral staircase that goes to the top however it is pretty damaged now so people are not allowed on it.
This area is called Fort. It is a posh area with many courts and art galleries in the vicinity. The Museum is also very closeby hence this area is frequented by tourists.

Gateway of India

June 16th 2008 10:44
So what is the gateway of India? Don't worry it's not like a gate where all immigrants queue up to enter India.
gateway

This is a pretty huge structure built to honour King George V and Queen Mary when they visited India in 1911.
In three years time it will be declared a heritage, already they are doing some renovation here I am not sure what... I'l go check it out today.
Around boat rides are available. They take you to nearby island of Alibaug, Elephanta etc in about an hour or two. These are mainly places to go for the beaches. Also in Elephanta there are carved caves.
elephanta

The majestic building behind gateway is Taj, a 5 star hotel. There is a story behind this hotel.
It seems that the architect hired a boat and went to see the construction of his beloved hotel which was designed after the Taj Mahal of Agra. And what he saw distressed him so much thathe tried to kill himself from the boat. Because the whole building was being built the other way around!! The part facing the sea was supposed to be behind and the behind part in front!!
Oh well... anyway the tall building next Taj is the New taj Hotel. This was kind of added to the older hotel and now the main entrance to the hotel is via new Taj.
And the grassy lawn you see behind the Gateway, has a statue in it. Whose statue is it??
A thousand guineas to the right answer...
Clue: I have spoken incessantly abt the this person in my previous posts.

2nd Clue: It is the inevitable.....

Marine Drive

June 7th 2008 11:22
This is one of the prettiest places in Mumbai, and it is really close to my house which makes it great!
It is one of my favourite haunts, I just go to the sea, sit on the parapet read a book, contemplate, be with friends, meditate, do yoga, watch sunsets, star gaze at night whatever....
