Temples in the Trees

February 12th 2010 16:33
It seems the most common place to find a temple in the city are trees. Every few trees you will see there is a small idol or framed photo of a God hung on the tree. The few people in that area start offering flowers and prayers to this idol and it becomes a temple.
Many of them actually become quite popular, and part of the entire hum of the city.

On my 15 minute walk from home to office I actually come across 3 such shrines!

Tree Temple

The above tree is actually a place the drivers and other guys gather around to play cards, but everyday there is a fresh flower garland there.

Something surprising in Mumbai is the lack of appropriate head gear in scorching Sun. Afternoons can be very hot in Mumbai summertimes, but hardly anyone is wearing a headgear!!
Some head gears that are rarely seen,

* Hankies
Mostly men just drape a white handkerchief on their scalp, they tuck it under their ears to stop it from flying off in the wind.

* Umbrellas
Old women are often seen sporting an umbrella. these are sometimes white or multi-coloured

* Scarves/Dupattas
Indian traditional punjabi dresses include a long scarf called Dupatta with them. These are often draped around the head by women.

* Hats/Caps
Few people wear a cap or a hat.

Monsoon coming in Mumbai

May 30th 2009 13:12
Its almost the end of hot, sundry days in Mumbai, already it has drizzled for a few days. Now we are all awaiting the monsoons!
Hoping it comes soon and takes this heat off!

However the monsoons often bring with them waterlogging, rodents, mosquitoes and other problems.

This time the municipal corporation has issued an notice marking a few days in June and a few days in July when the tide will be high. They have asked people to stay indoors on these days, in case it rains there could be flooding!

Happy monsoons....
