Gaylord

August 4th 2008 12:31
Gaylord is a mid sized restaurant in Churchgate. It has a really good bakery, it is one of the first good bakeries available in Mumbai. Recently new places have started up close by but it still retains a charm.
They have a large variety of pastries, cakes, pies, mousse and other mouth watering stuff.
For those who don't want dessert they have puffs, mini pizzas, bread rolls and other dishes in veg and non veg both.
Other than this it has freshly baked bread from the baker which is right behind the bakery at around 6 in the evening. They were one of the first people to keep a variety of breads like tomato and spinach, rye, masala bread. Their french bread is my favourite.

There is also a restaurant attached to the bakery which serves meals and snacks, which is strictly OK.
In pastries they often have a variety of flavors and you might want to experiment like I always do but just once it back fired when I bought a strawberry mousse cake and well it tasted like a dollop of too sweet jam!

Paan

July 6th 2008 15:26
This is a unique Indian dish... It probably originated from North India. More than food it is like a post-food ritual.
Supposedly it eases digestion but no one knows truly what it does. Just this that there are many many who really dig it!

paan

Its made of leaves from paan plant. Alot of ingredients are mixed into it depending on a persons choice.

Some paans have tobacco content in it and quite a few people are addicted to it. Men as well Women eat this paan. And they are favourites of certain communities like the Marwaris (from Rajasthan), Biharis (North Indians).
In mumbai it is a great favourite. Almost outside every restaurant there will be a paanwala (paan vendor) selling this stuff. Infact such a vendor from Mumbai actually has a website of his own!! And takes online paan orders!
You can check it out here.

In terms of hygiene it is really questionable because in order to make this paan the guy has to put his finger on it to mix the ingredients. And often the fingers can be extremely dirty .
So I usually avoid it because I am kind of a health freak. But when I do indulge in it, my favourite is called "magai". This paan is usually eaten as 2 small paans, really sweet.

Food!!

June 24th 2008 17:58
Can't believe I did not make a category for food!!! Cause Mumbai People love food! I mean really every little nook and cranny has a hawker selling food. And it is amazing that they don't even try to make it look hygienic! Fine so I am gonna put this post in HangOuts because food streets around Mumbai can be considered decent hang outs, if your into that sort of thing.
In many areas of the city mostly business areas dense with office there is usually a food-street, this street is like a little space crammed with a large number of food stalls. Usually you can get a wide range of foods here from chinese, north indian, south indian, mumbai style food, pizzas, frankies, sandwiches, even deserts!
vendor

One distinct feature of these streets are that they are usually crammy and narrow and pretty dirty so I usually wonder why the educated, earning people of society eat in such a dump?? In such a reckless fashion.

MUMBAI FOOD:

One of the popular mumbai dishes is the vada pav which is basically bread with a potato patty inside.
vada pav

There is some garlic and seasonings in it. This is like the burger equivalent in Mumbai. Its really tasty!
Other mumbai dishes include bhels, chats, etc....

Bhel is like a mixture of a large number of stuff like tomatoes, cucumbers, puffed rice and some other stuff which is tough for me to describe. Here check this recipe out!
It looks like this:

bhel

All over India there are bhel variants which are called by local names but the funda is the same!
